The museum was opened in the first half of the 20th century in the Carthusian monastery where Fryderyk Chopin and George Sand lived in the winter of 1838-1839. A painting by Sand's son Maurice was reproduced, showing the cell inhabited by Frédéric Chopin and George Sand at the time. This later served as evidence for the designation of today's cell number four as the couple's accommodation.
